The Donna Reed Show

Here are just a few examples of the many episodes of the series.
The Punishment pt1
The Punishment pt2
All Women Are Dangerous
The Chinese Horse

TV shows of the 50s were loaded with young boys wearing their hair with a perfectly combed side part and a wave in the front. And of course, heavily slicked down with lots of grease or tonic to make a wet shine in the bright TV lights. The Donna Reed Show featured Jeff Stone (played by Paul Peterson) who wore that ever so slick classic "cub scout" style. You may want to check out the rest of the Donna Reed series to see more of Jeff's hair style. (found many places on the web including YouTube) Other characters often appear in this series with well slicked hair.

The Middleton Family at the New York World's Fair

This classic Westinghouse video has many great showings of the classic slicked hair on the young Bud Middleton. He sports a very wet and slicked straight back style, typical of many more conservative youth of the post-depression era when the New York World's fair brought hope to millions. See it here in it's entirety. NOTE: To see the best image, be sure to click on the highest resolution option in the left column (MPEG4 being the best) for your internet connection once you are on the link below.

Barbers (ca. 1959-1960)

This film, made by the AFL-CIO, gives a detailed view of what barber and beauty shops were like before the 60s revolution turned them into Unisex Salons. No greasing action but lots of scenes in the shop. Let your imagination fill in the rest. The film is viewed on the Internet Archive website at: http://www.archive.org/details/Barbers1959 in several different formats.

Close Harmony (1942)

General Motors made this wartime film to explain why it was taking so long for factories to retool for war production. No greasing action but lots of scenes in a typical shop in the 1940s.Let your imagination fill in the rest. There is very degrading stereotypical protrayal of a black porter - typical of many films of that period and is included here for educational purposes. The film is viewed on the Internet Archive website at: http://www.archive.org/details/CloseHar1942 in several different formats.

Electro Dad
