YouTube Goes Slick
by Jim Brown
Just before the internet became a household appliance, those who were interested in the slicked hairstyles that were once popular in the 20s through the 50s had little choice in finding ways to obtain greases, creams, and hair tonics. The dry look was all you could find and networking with others who shared a common interested in the slicked hair fashion statement was almost impossible.
Then along came Google and YouTube!
Today all you need to do is search the web and up comes a wealth of videos, clubs, message boards, websites such as SlickVille.com, and on-line stores such as theGreaseShop.com all having to do with slicked hairstyles.
The slicked hairstyle is no longer purely a retro thing worn by the older generations who want to spark some memories or stay with what they are comfortable with. Today the younger generations are discovering slicking as a "new" fashion statement. A look to impress. What's old is new again.
What's happening on YouTube is guys and gals of almost all ages, but particularly the teen and young adults are aiming their webcams and digital video cameras at themselves while they pile on the greases and slick back their hair like the Fonz used to do in "Happy Days." Some of these videos are taking a sensual approach as they fondle their hair into a variety of styles as they admire themselves in the mirror. Being homemade gives them a "reality TV" look; and, they are certainly genuine expressions of their makers. In some cases the choice of current music is evidence of the slicked style's place in today's younger culture. There's also an abundance of songs like Dion's "I Wonder Why" enjoyed by kids while they seek the Elvis look.
Rockabilly is alive and well and living amid all this Retro-fuss!
To give you a taste and a feel for wassup, weve included a small sampling of some YouTube videos. Be sure to look at the right hand column where YouTube shows related videos.
