Combover: The Movie

So you thought at one time or still think you are the only person around who likes slick hair or that much criticized combover... THINK AGAIN!!! Not only is there several discussion groups on Yahoo, a few websites, and of course SlickVille.com, but now there is a movie about COMBOVERS! That's right, a 55 minute documentary with lots of men wearing combovers and interviews with "experts." We hear from the men who wear them, their relatives, the hair transplant people, and a psychologist who analyzes why-a-comb over.

Shot on location in cities across America, director Chris Marino and co-director and camerman Tim Fenoglio of No Barking Productions set out "looking for extreme combovers." "Combover: The Movie" examins the subject from every viewpoint; those who love combovers, those that hate them, those who find them simply a super turn-on, and those that just can't stop laughing about people they know who have one -- everything you ever wanted to know about the combover and more than you ever wanted to know. Combover even looks at some religious implications.

The festival program listing:
Some of the finest moments in hairstyle history came during the Iran-Contra hearings; as a relief from the political storm, a startled nation's water-cooler discussions hinged on Senator George Mitchell's "combover." The style itself is far from dead--that impulse for a balding man to bring a few strands of hair up from the side and slap them over the top of his shiny pate. Producers/directors Chris Marino and Tim Fenoglio document a trek across the United States that is filled with hilarious and often intimately revealing interviews with guys who sport the combover. An avid golfer, Shelly talks easily about his photo-library documenting his hairdo over the years. For Barry, a restaurateur from Chicago, it's "just a habit." Rufus maintains that the combover keeps his head warm on cold days, though he admits his wife would like him to reconsider the hairstyle. Jim is a bald man who loves hair: he would kind of like a pompadour but has to settle for the combover. Already touted on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno and "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," Combover: The Movie also digs into the hairstyle's history and cultural and religious contexts. The history-happy filmmakers even discover veiled references in the Old Testament. They also include interviews with a number of hair experts, including physicians, hair "practitioners" and an enthusiast who obtained a U.S. patent for the combover. Shooting over 18 months, they paid out $100 for each glorious interview. "Nowadays people are too quick to get transplants or wear a toupé," laments Shelly, with his hairstyle photo-library. "Finally someone (has recorded) for posterity the dying art of the combover." Interviewer Marino has worked as producer and director for Discovery, Animal Planet and HGTV; Fenoglio has worked as a cameraman for Animal Planet and on the video side of the music industry.

"Combover: The Movie" on the Jay Leno show

TV host Jay Leno had as a guest, Chris Marino September 22, the man who is making the Combover Movie. He showed a clip of it with a man who actually shaves the top of his head into male pattern baldness and greases part of the side over the top creating a great combover. The clip showed him using a razor on the top of his head with the long left side hanging over his ear and then brushing the greased hair over the bald area. It was so hot seeing a full haired man wearing his hair like this because he liked it that way. I can't wait to see the whole movie, especially with Jim Brown in it!

When is Combover coming to a theater near me?

The film was shot in video and will first be seen on television in the U.S. A distributor has been signed on and will see the most beneficial path for distribution. At this time no theatrical or home video release is planned, however, we will keep you posted as soon as we are informed about how you can obtain a personal copy when it becomes available. We are hoping that any means of consumer distribution will allow us to make the movie available to you in video format here on SlickVille.com.

Hrer's what people are saying about "Combover: The Movie"

I viewed the trailer for "Combover: The Movie" and was amazed at the guy who made himself bald and did the combover because he saw a man who had a combover, who was smoking a pipe and looked really dignified! I WANT TO MEET THIS GUY -- HE IS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAN -- do you know who it is? I may have to write to the director of the movie!
Best wishes Mr. Combover

Dave

What bothers me a little about the movie though is that it seems to be a satire in many ways and may embarrass the few remaining men who have the confidence to express themselves in a way that makes them fee sexy. Because of all the television commercial spoofs and jokes over the past few years more men are giving up combovers and going with the most boring and unattractive hairstyle in the world: the buzzcut. It makes me sad to think that this movie might cause more men to feel self conscious and buzz.

EDITOR'S REPLY TO CHARLES: The pre-release trailer you saw on their website does take a light hearted look at the combover. The director and I talked at length about the final direction of the film and he said that he had added a lot of material that presents the combover in a fair and positive light. Including the scene of the man who shaved his head on top so he could have a combover. The director himself is fascinated by and is attracted to men with combovers. All the scenes I am in show the combover as a source of erotic pleasure and in a positive light. I look forwarded to a balanced final cut that can be enjoyed by all no matter what their views. And most importantly not turn people off who are balding and who are considering a combover.

Press Release

CABLEready NAMED INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTOR
FOR ‘COMBOVER: THE MOVIE’

Humorous Investigation of Maligned Hairstyle

To be Showcased at MIPCOM

NORWALK, CT and DENVER, CO–CABLEready has been named international distributor for the irreverent one-hour documentary COMBOVER: THE MOVIE, produced by No Barking Productions and directed and written by Chris Marino with his partner Tim Fenoglio.  CABLEready will screen the film for prospective buyers at the MIPCOM market, October 17-21 in Cannes, France.

Covering brand new ground in pop culture territory, Combover is already attracting national media attention and establishing itself as the next must-see documentary.  Denver director Chris Marino is set to appear on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno the week of September 20th.  Earlier this summer, Marino appeared on MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” as well as on NPR and Capital Gold Networks London

COMBOVER: THE MOVIE chronicles Chris Marino’s cross-country search for the ultimate combover, a hairstyle in which hair from the side of the head of a balding man is combed over the man’s bald spot.  Shot over 18 months in locations throughout the United States, Combover peers into the fascinating world of this classic but notorious hairstyle.

Cameras follow Marino as he seeks and finds examples of “extreme” combovers.  He also interviews various experts, including physicians, hair practitioners, and even someone who obtained a U.S. patent for the combover.

“In the tradition of Michael Moore (‘Farenheit 9/11’) and Morgan Sperlock (‘Supersize Me’), Chris Marino immerses himself into COMBOVER: THE MOVIE, bringing hilarious results even as he conducts a serious investigation into the psychology and history of combovers,” said Gary Lico, president and CEO of CABLEready.  “Examples abound of classic combovers worldwide, so we expect this film to be embraced internationally as well as in the U.S.”

“To get COMBOVER: THE MOVIE before as many eyes as possible, we sought a distributor with expertise not only in finding the right fit in U.S. cable, but also on the global scene,” said Marino. “CABLEready, as one of the worldwide leaders in providing non-fiction content, fit the requirements perfectly.”
