Islander Barber's popularity
continues to grow

Dedra Meeks.
Galveston County - The Daily News, Dec. 14, 2006

Master Barber Manny Salazar has taken over the barbershop for Andrew, who cut hair for 40 years.

In today’s society, the focus has shifted from old-fashioned comforts to fast-paced lifestyles and passing fads. For the man who wants some quiet pampering, there are precious few places of retreat.

Islander Barber appreciates this fact and understands that sometimes, men just need to get away and relax in their own space.

Islander Barber has held onto old-fashioned barbershop traditions and is offering men a break from today’s trendy salon scene. Master Barber Manny Salazar, Jr. believes that barbers should take their time and not treat their customers with indifference or haste.

“Do you want to go to the doctor and be thrown out in 10 minutes? Or the dentist?” Salazar asked. “Hair cutting has become a volume-based business, and women’s salons outnumber men’s.” With this in mind, Islander Barber takes a simple approach with its customers.

One step inside Islander Barber, and the client will immediately sense a difference. There is no noisy television or music to distract or annoy. One thing that can be found, however, is lively conversation covering anything from sports to politics. Things that matter to men are the main focus at Islander Barber.

“Barbershops play a very subtle role in communities,” explained Salazar, who took over the shop when Andrew, who was the barber for 40 years, retired.

A rare find, Salazar still performs old-fashioned shaves, complete with hot towel and foam. Razor work such as this is a dying art form and can only be found in a select few shops. The experience of this type of shave is very soothing and relaxing for the customer. In fact, Salazar has had men fall asleep in the chair.

Salazar is excited at the response Islander Barber has received from “kind and receptive” clients throughout the area.

Houstonian Travis Meeks has become a regular visitor at Islander Barber and has the highest praise for Salazar:“I will never go to a chain salon again. There’s a place just down the road from my house, but I would rather drive a few extra miles to have a good conversation with a friend like Manny.”
